Block Paving Driveways In Hornchurch & Upminster

Is your 1930s side drive too narrow for the cars you actually own?

Herringbone, stretcher and basketweave block paving in clay and concrete for semis and terraces across Hornchurch, Upminster and Elm Park

Block paving is the surface that suits the typical Hornchurch front best. Most of the town was built between the wars as semis with a bay window, a low wall and a side drive wide enough for an Austin Seven. Taking that side drive across the whole front in a herringbone pattern with a contrasting border is the job we do more than any other, and the reason block suits it is simple: it looks right against the brick, it can be lifted and relaid if a water main ever needs digging up, and when it is laid on a proper base with the edges set in concrete it outlasts every other surface we offer.

Why block paving driveways

Six reasons block paving still wins on an interwar front

01

Lift it, fix it, put it back

A block drive is the only surface where a leaking water main or a new EV cable does not mean a patch that never matches. The blocks come up, the trench goes in, the same blocks go back.

02

It belongs on the street

Brindle, autumn and charcoal blocks were designed to sit next to red and brown brick. On the conservation streets around St Andrews and Langtons, clay pavers pass without an argument.

03

Permeable if you want it

Permeable concrete block with wider joints drains through itself, which keeps the front inside the 2008 rules without a channel. Standard block drains through the joints and a channel at the gate.

04

Forty years is not unusual

Concrete blocks are rated for decades; clay pavers for longer. What fails on block drives is the base and the edges, which is why both get more of our time than the laying does.

05

Patterns for narrow fronts

Ninety-degree herringbone makes a narrow Elm Park front look wider. A stretcher bond runs the eye down a long Harold Wood drive. We set the pattern out before a block is cut.

06

Walk on it today, park tomorrow

There is no curing time to speak of. Once the joints are sanded and the plate has been over it, you can walk on it that evening and park on it within a day or two.

How it works

How we lay block paving in Hornchurch and Upminster

Pattern and colour are the fun part. Steps three to five are where the drive is actually built.

  1. Measure, dig, decide

On the site visit we measure the front, dig a trial hole and check how water leaves the garden now. On clay plots towards Emerson Park and Cranham that decides the dig depth. On gravel plots nearer Elm Park it decides whether a soakaway is even needed.

  2. Itemised quote

Block type and thickness, pattern, dig depth, Type 1 thickness, edge detail, drainage and the laying course, each with a line and a fixed total.

  3. Out with the old, down with the base

The concrete, crazy paving or old tarmac comes out whole. We excavate to depth, membrane soft clay, and compact 150 to 200mm of MOT Type 1 in two passes.

  4. Edge courses haunched in concrete

Every block edge, kerb and soldier course is bedded on concrete with a haunch behind it. Loose edges are the single most common fault on the block drives we are asked to repair.

  5. Drainage where the water actually goes

A linear channel across the gate, a gully, or a connection to a soakaway, with the falls set in the base so the finished drive sheds water inside your boundary.

  6. Screed and lay

A 30 to 40mm sharp sand laying course screeded to the falls, then the blocks laid in pattern from the house out, with every cut made with a block splitter or a wet saw, never a hammer.

  7. Sand, compact, hand over

Kiln-dried sand brushed into the joints, a plate compactor over the whole drive, a second sanding, and then the walk-round with the written guarantee.

  8. Not sure which surface suits the house? The cost guide compares all six side by side, and the site visit is free either way.

The guarantee

What our guarantee actually covers on a Hornchurch and Upminster driveway

Most guarantees in this trade cover the surface, because the surface is the easy bit. Ours is written around the structure underneath, which is where a driveway on Havering's London clay either holds or does not. We put the excavation depth, the compacted MOT Type 1 thickness, the concrete haunch behind every edge and the drainage route on the quote, and we guarantee that build. If the surface sinks, spreads or ponds because any of that was not done right, we come back and fix it at our cost.

  • Sub-base depth and compaction written on the quote, not left to the day
  • Every edge course set on concrete and haunched, so nothing creeps
  • Settlement, rutting or lifting caused by our groundwork put right free
  • Manufacturer cover on resin, block and porcelain on top of ours

Before you choose anyone

What separates a thirty-year block drive from a three-year one

The base. A block drive that sinks at the gate or the garage door has almost always been laid on too little hardcore, or on hardcore that was tipped and not compacted. Ask every firm quoting to state the depth of Type 1 and how it is compacted. If the answer is 100mm or 'a good layer', keep asking. On the London Clay that runs under the north of Hornchurch and most of Upminster we go to 200mm and compact it in two layers.

The edges. Blocks are loose stones held in a shape, and the shape is held by the edge restraint. When the edge course is laid on sand it creeps outward a millimetre at a time until the pattern fans open and the joints fill with weeds. Every edge we lay is bedded on concrete and haunched behind, including the ones you will never see against the house wall.

The pavers. Concrete block comes in 50mm and 60mm thicknesses, and a drive wants the 60mm. Clay pavers cost more, hold their colour for life and are what a conservation officer around St Andrews or Corbets Tey will expect to see. Ask what block is on the quote by name, and look at a full-size sample against your brick before you choose.

Patterns, borders and the block itself

Forty-five-degree herringbone is the strongest pattern for a drive because the blocks lock against the turning load of a car. Ninety-degree herringbone is nearly as strong and easier to cut tidily on a narrow front. A single or double soldier course in a darker block frames the drive and hides the edge restraint. For the Edwardian houses in Emerson Park and the older streets around Hornchurch village, a clay paver in a multi-red or a blue-black is worth the extra cost.

  • 60mm concrete block as standard, clay pavers on request
  • Herringbone, stretcher, basketweave and mixed-size patterns
  • Contrast borders, circles and inlays set out before cutting
  • Permeable block for fronts with nowhere to drain

"Most of the sunken block drives we are asked to look at across Hornchurch have the same two faults, under 100mm of base and edge blocks laid on sand, and neither shows until the third winter."

Cost

What block paving costs around Hornchurch

Block paving runs from about £75 per square metre for a plain 60mm concrete block on a sound plot to £115 and above for clay pavers, deep excavation and lots of cutting. A typical widened semi front of 45 square metres comes in at £3,400 to £5,200 including the dig, base, edging, drainage and the blocks. The figure moves with:

  • +Clay versus concrete pavers, which can be the biggest single difference
  • +Dig depth, which is deeper on the clay north of the railway
  • +The number of edges, curves and cuts in the design
  • +A soakaway or new gully where the plot has no drainage
  • +A wider dropped kerb through Havering Council to match the new width

FAQ

Block Paving Driveways questions

Do I need planning permission for block paving in Hornchurch?

Usually not. Havering Council follows the national rule from 2008: a front drive of any size is fine without an application if the surface is permeable or the water drains to a lawn, border or soakaway within your boundary. Permeable block passes on its own. Standard block passes with a drainage channel and somewhere for the water to go, which we build in. Flats, listed houses and the Gidea Park Article 4 streets are the exceptions.

Can you widen my side drive without paving the whole front?

Yes, and on a typical Hornchurch semi we would suggest it. Taking the drive to the boundary and keeping a planted strip along the fence or under the bay looks better than wall-to-wall block, holds the house's value and keeps the drainage simple. We set the edge course so the bed is contained and the blocks cannot creep into it.

Will weeds come through the joints?

Some moss and the odd seedling will settle in the joints of any block drive. Kiln-dried sand brushed in once a year keeps it to a minimum, and a resin-bound jointing compound is an option if you want none at all. What you should never see is a weed coming up from under the drive, which only happens where there is no membrane and a thin base.

How long does a block paved driveway take?

A two-car front on a semi is three to four working days from the first dig to the final sanding. Add a day for a soakaway or a long drainage run, and a couple more for walls or steps. You can walk on it the evening it is finished and park on it a day or two later.

Clay or concrete block?

Concrete is the sensible default: more colours, cheaper, and plenty strong enough at 60mm. Clay costs more, does not fade, and looks right on the older houses and the conservation streets around St Andrews, Langtons and Corbets Tey. On a 1930s semi either works. On an Emerson Park Edwardian, go clay.

Do you lay block paving outside Hornchurch and Upminster?

Yes. We cover Romford, Gidea Park, Harold Wood, Harold Hill, Collier Row and Rainham within Havering, and Dagenham, Barking, Chadwell Heath, Ilford, Gants Hill, Brentwood and South Ockendon beyond it. The per-metre price is the same everywhere; the only thing that changes is which council handles the dropped kerb.
